Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PRESS STATEMENT
6TH APRIL 2010
LIVELIHOOD OF 120 EMPLOYEES OF
PUTRAJAYA HOLDINGS UNDER THREAT
Putrajaya Holdings Sdn, a subsidiary of Petronas, has launched intensive efforts to get rid of all their 120 non-executive employees.
Union of Employees in the Construction Industry (UECI) an affiliate of the MTUC reported that the Putrajaya Holdings (PJH) action started soon after the union submitted their claim for recognition on March 13, 2010.
PJH Management is pressuring the 120 workers to sign resignation letter and PJH in turn will make arrangement with another outsourcing company to employ them.
All the workers have refused to comply with management’s demands. They are deeply concerned of their future employment prospects and in the absence of any information on the terms and conditions that would be accorded by the outsourcing contractor they consider this exercise as an attempt to alter their status from permanent employment to casual workers.
PJH management’s action is obviously aimed to avoid the union’s claim for recognition said MTUC Secretary General, G. Rajasekaran.
Sdra Mohd Khalid bin Hj Atan, Deputy President of MTUC, who met with most of the 120 workers, pointed out that the company’s action to get rid of the workers is clearly in violation of the provisions of Section 10 of the Industrial Relations Act 1967. It is a shame that Putrajaya Holdings, a subsidiary of Petronas, a reputable Government Linked Corporation has embarked on a union busting mission.
PJH management’s attempt to alter the status of the 120 employees from permanent to casual workers is contrary to the Prime Minister’s mission to raise the income levels of working families under the New Economic Model.
MTUC will submit a report on the unlawful activities of PJH Management to the Director General of Industrial Relations.
G. RAJASEKARAN
