Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR: With its strategic location in the centre of Asean, Malaysia has all the advantages to harvest the benefits of the Belt and Road initiative, said Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
The MCA president said besides serving Asean, Malaysia has good infrastructure and one of the best road systems in the region.
“We also have very good ports. Our Port Klang is among the top 11 ports in the world.
“We are building more ports such as in Melaka, Kuantan, Bintulu and Kuching. All these ports are coming up to serve this region,” he said in his speech during the launch of the world’s first Belt and Road themed SME mobile clinic by the MCA Belt and Road Centre (MBrace) at Wisma MCA here yesterday.
Liow said the country’s good legal system, civil environment and political situation were very conducive for foreign investors, besides being a multi-racial and multi-lingual country and Malaysia will be very competitive when it comes to engaging a conducive investing environment.
“Our country is among the early respondents of the Belt and Road initiative and we hope we can have an early harvest.
“We have a good relationship with China and at the same time, we can see that China has a big potential and is the second largest economy in the world.
“Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, China would want to ensure that the initiative will prosper their neighbours and the world will benefit from this,” Liow said.
The mobile clinic by MBrace will provide mobile services to investors of the initiative.
MCA China Affairs Committee chairman and MBrace executive chairman Datuk Seri Chuah Poh Khiang said the mobile clinic would travel to second- and third-tier cities around the country to bridge the gap and share information and business opportunities.
Chuah said in addition, it would offer free public and business consulting services for SMEs to help them transform and widen their opportunities.
