Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
JOHOR BARU: The state government wants to encourage its various departments and agencies to sign the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR).
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said every civil servant must uphold integrity to ensure they were more responsible and free from any malpractices.
He said Johor and state government-linked firms had signed the IBR.
“Civil servants must be trustworthy, reliable and have a strong character to refuse bribes,” he said after launching the state government’s I-MOVE programme at Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios here yesterday.
The I-MOVE is a state government initiative under the Blue Ocean Strategy to ensure all implementations by the government are carried out under the key performance index.
Mohamed Khaled said there must be a way to make sure that only trustworthy people were in the system.
“Those who fail to qualify should not hold any position within the government,” he said.
On another matter, he blasted the Opposition for creating a negative and false perception of the ruling Barisan Nasional government.
“We could see it with the Goods and Services Tax (GST). “However, after it became apparent that the GST is a good tax system to collect revenue for the Government, they are making a U-turn and want to keep it,” he said.
