Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said the improvement was
the result of the ministry’s relentless efforts through the Department of Occupational
Safety and Health to ensure that the right safety and health measures were undertaken
at the workplace.
<p>"We want it to be part of the work culture or a way of life," he
told reporters after chairing the ministry’s post-cabinet meeting here Wednesday.</p>
<p>He said the achievement of eight accidents per 1,000 workers was considered
moderate compared to some other countries where the proportion stood at 13 or
14 accidents per 1,000 workers.</p>
<p>He called on employers, especially those operating factories or in other vulnerable
sectors, to have a paradigm shift in the way their workers work and inculcate
more safety features to improve the working environment.</p>
<p>He said they should take pre-emptive measures rather than reacting only when
accidents happened. — BERNAMA
