Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
MIRI: More than 100 people have lodged reports at the Miri Central police station after they were allegedly cheated by fake employment agents.
These workers, comprising local bumiputra men and women, claimed they had been duped into paying thousands of ringgit to a certain employment agency for oil and gas jobs in Brunei.
The victims claimed that after paying up to RM2,000 for so-called “fees” to process their work permits, these employment agents ran away with their money.
Similar reports have been made at the station here since Monday (April 23).
“We were told that there are hundreds of other victims in Miri, Bintulu and Kuching who have also paid deposits to secure jobs.
“Unfortunately, we cannot contact these agents anymore.
“After we paid them our cash deposit, they closed their office and disconnected their phone lines,” he claimed.
The police in Miri are still compiling the reports and taking statements from the victims
