MTUC condemns abuse of domestic workers – Time to Ratify ILO Convention 189

MTUC handed over a Memorandum to the Ketua Setiausaha Kem. Sumber Manusia on 5 Dec 2012 expressing dissatisfaction and disgust over the latest revelation of extensive abuse, ill treatment and illegal imprisonment of 105 domestic worker which is clearly in violation of the ANTI trafficking in Persons Act.

MTUC stressed the need for the government to either enact a new law for the domestic workers or include them in the existing labour legislations.

As of 26 February 2013 - Unfortunately there is no new development since MTUC handed over the 4 page memorandum to the Secretary General of MOHR on 5th December 2012 urging the Government to ratify ILO Convention 189 and take immediate measures to grant legal protection to the 250,000 domestic workers in the country. A large number of domestic workers are expected to participate in the MTUC International Women's Convention to seek public support for their call to ratify Convention 189 and accord a more humane working and living conditions.
