Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA TERENGGANU, May 14 (Bernama) — The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) welcomed various efforts by the government to boost the country’s performance by 2020.
Its president, Azih Muda, said programmes like the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation programme (ETP) could propel Malaysia into becoming a developed country in six years.
He said the government’s aim on achieving a developed world status with a per capita income of US$15,000 by 2020 could be realised.
“Cuepacs supports the efforts that have been made and feel that the standard of living of the people will improve further,” he said when met by Bernama here.
He said this in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s speech during the launch of the GTP and ETP 2013 annual report on the GTP having recorded a 104 per cent success rate across its National Key Result Areas (NKRAs).
Azih said all quarters should support programmes made by the government, especially on efforts to fight corruption and enhancing integrity.
On the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M), he said 4.8 million people had benefitted from it, adding that the recipients included low income civil servants.
“Our hope is that after this, through the various packages planned by the government, they will not only changed the landscape of the people, but also boost the public sector so that it would be on par with the private sector,” he added.
