Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?

The Industrial Relation Department, Head Office, Putrajaya Officials visited MTUC headquarters today. Officials who were present were the Director General of IRD, Mr. Khalid Bin Jali, En Ahmad Kamal dan En Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi, IRDM Legal Division, Mrs. Rozila, Division of Trade Disputes and several other IRD officers.
They were welcomed by MTUC Secretary General Bro J Solomon, MTUC Financial Secretary, Bro Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani, Bro Somahsundram, MTUC Education Officer, Bro Zul Thye, MRC Coordinator, Mrs. Christina, Personal Assistant to MTUC Secretary-General and 3 representatives from the Legal Aid Center.
Both parties discussed several matters and proposed improvements in the process of conducting conciliation at IRD either under Section 18 or Section 20, Employment Insurance Scheme, Industrial Revolution 4.0, TPPA and other matters relating to the Industrial Relations in Malaysia.
It was also agreed that there be periodic meetings between the IRD Officials and leaders of various union leaders as requested by some Unions.
MTUC will organise such periodical meetings and believes that this will facilitate both social partners to understand and improve the delivery system to serve the workers’ needs more effectively.
The meeting ended with exchange of mementos between IRD and MTUC.
