Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR: PSM central committee members S. Arutchelvan and V. Selvam were questioned by the police over the Workers Day rally.
The two men, accompanied by their lawyer P. Rajsurian, went into the Dang Wangi police station at 2pm yesterday and came out 90 minutes later.
Arutchelvan said they had their statements taken and were asked about 20 questions regarding the rally held on May 1.
“Everything the police asked us, they already have the answers to.
“They were there when we were rallying. And now they are saying we broke rules stipulated under the Peaceful Assembly Act by rallying near a mosque,” he said at the police headquarters yesterday.
It was reported that a crowd of people gathered in front of Masjid Negara on May 1 to take part in the 2017 May Day rally.
The rally-goers marched through the city, eventually arriving at the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail.
Speaking to the crowd were those representing factory workers, farmers, estate workers as well as the orang asli community, all of whom spoke about the challenges and hopes of their respective groups.
Throughout the 40-minute march, the crowd chanted slogans, sang songs and waved flags in support of the workers’ movement.
The rally also focused on providing workers with a fund to help support them when they are retrenched.
