Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
In the 10.30am incident at the CCM Chemicals Sdn Bhd ammonia terminal, one
worker was injured after the corrosive chemical splashed on him.
<p>Zakariah Misan, 54, suffered burns on his back and right arm and has been admitted
to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.</p>
<p>When met at the hospital, he said workers had just finished loading a tanker
with the chemical when he noticed that one of the connections was loose.</p>
<p>"I was trying to rectify it when it came off and the ammonia just shot
up like a jet stream.</p>
<p>"It evaporated quickly and shot towards the roof before falling."</p>
<p>Zakariah said he could not remember much after he was hit.</p>
<p>"I was screaming in pain. All I remember was the workers putting me in
the ambulance."</p>
<p>CCM corporate affairs manager Nur Melissa Fernandez Abdullah said its emergency
response team from Shah Alam was rushed to the scene and stopped the leak in
about 15 minutes.</p>
<p>"It has been contained and there was no further damage or injuries. Operations
are back to normal," she said, adding the incident was being investigated.</p>
<p>Firemen sprayed water over the area. A hazardous material team from Shah Alam
was at the scene.
