Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR: An overhead bridge under construction collapsed amid the Friday afternoon downpour in Jalan Genting Klang and crushed an Indonesian worker to death.
Seven firemen were dispatched to the sceneto rescue the 50-year-old man who was trapped in the rubble but they only managed to pull his lifeless body out at about 2pm.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Azizan Ismail said the man, identified only as Salbahri, was resting under the incomplete bridge by the side of Jalan Genting Klang near Columbia Hotel at about 1.50pm when the structure collapsed.
The victim and his colleagues ran for cover, but Salbahri was believed to be hit by rubble.
The incident did not cause any traffic congestion as the bridge was being built in a cordoned off area by the side of the busy road.
“We are still investigating what could have caused the bridge to collapse,” Azizan said.
