Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Everyone should be able to buy a house; and, those workers in the B40 and M40 category must be given a helping hand to have access to purchase affordable house.
For this, a Housing Commission must be set up to take on a dynamic role to provide access to purchase affordable houses for B40 and M40 by setting up an effective system and eradicating corruption.
The Commission must ensure affordable housing schemes are not turned into businesses. It should be in control of demand and supply, vetting system, check developers, maintain housing standards including the size and price and ensure delivery deadlines are met. It should ensure the interest rate for workers from B40 household is zero percent whilst M40 are accorded a 2% interest rate.
In order to maintain a check and balance, the Housing Commission shall consist of workers’, employers’, government reps, property experts and relevant members from the civil society.
