Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
He said leaders of the opposition political parties DAP, PAS and Parti Keadilan
Rakyat had participated in the pickets organised by the congress on June 25
and Aug 8 at 15 locations nationwide.
<p>"I regret that the MTUC has allowed itself to be easily made use of by
the opposition parties which have used the MTUC for their own political interests,"
he told reporters at Parliament here.</p>
<p>MTUC President Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud said yesterday the congress was not
subservient to any political party when he responded to a warning by Abdul Rahman
on Wednesday in the Dewan Rakyat that the ministry would deregister the MTUC
and other unions if they became tools of the opposition to overthrow the government.</p>
<p>Abdul Rahman said the MTUC was now seen to be focusing more on wage demands
than the welfare of its members and that its pickets had had a negative impact
on the people and instilled fear in potential investors.</p>
<p>He said the setting up of wage determination councils was proof that the government
was sensitive to the welfare of workers.</p>
<p>On another matter, Abdul Rahman said the ministry had received more than 2,000
complaints since 2004 from Malaysians working in Singapore of having been cheated
by illegal employment agencies.</p>
<p>He advised people who wanted to work in the neighbouring country to verify
the status of employment agencies with the Manpower Department before accepting
job offers there.</p>
