Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KLANG, Nov 18 (Bernama) — Employers must provide a safe and conducive working environment to reduce or eliminate workers from being exposed to risks and accidents at work place, said Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) chief executive, Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
He said this was because employees and their capabilities contribute to the overall success of an organisation and human capital was an important and valuable asset to employers and the nation.
In recognising this, Socso has taken the initiative to work closely with employers and workers in carrying out awareness campaigns to prevent accidents.
“This transformation is not intended to divert from our responsibility in providing workers’ compensation but we want workers to enjoy a safe and healthy work place while they generate revenue for their employers and country,” he said in his speech at the Open Day and Accident Prevention Campaign at the Klang Socso office here, today.
His speech text was read by General Manager (Benefits Division), Fauzi Jaafar.
According to Mohammed Azman on average 63,441 accidents were reported each year and as of September this year 46,182 cases had been reported.
“Employers should not have the misconception that a worker’s journey to and from the work place was not their responsibility.
“Should an employee meet with an accident, employers too will have to bear with the losses as that would mean the loss of human capital, since an employee had acquired skills through training and experience,” he said.
He expressed hope that the accident prevention campaign would create awareness of safety and help reduce accidents among contributors.
