Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The CA was signed after negotiations lasting one month.

SEA president Datuk Dr Ong Kean Lee signed on behalf of the association while
the union was represented by its president V. Vivekhananthan.

The signing was witnessed by Penang Port Wages Council chairman Lee Hack Teik,
state MTUC chairman Abdul Razak Hamid and Penang Port Com-mission (PPC) chief
executive officer and general manager Capt Datuk Rahim Aziz.

Dr Ong said the 4% pay hike was agreed in view of the rising fuel cost and
the uncertainties in the global economy.

He said port labour employers had not resorted to cost cutting measures although
opera-tion costs had risen sharply.

“Hopefully, with the new wage adjustment, port workers will improve their
performance and productivity as a reward to their employers,” said Ong.

The CA is for a three-year pe-riod from July 1 to June 30, 2009.
