Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?

MTUC received a visit from PAS Workers & Consumer Division today upon their request dated August 20, 2019. This was made possible by the leadership of YB Siti Zailah Binti Mohd Yusoff-Member of Parliament of Rantau Panjang / Chairman of the Workers/Consumer Division, YB Ustaz Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman of the Member of Parliament Sik / Deputy Chairman of the Workers and Consumer Division, Sdra Izwan Abdul Halim-PAS Youth Exco and Sdra Maktar Bin Hashim- PAS Committee.
PAS delegation was welcomed by MTUC representatives comprising Bro J Solomon-Secretary-General, Bro Jey Kumar-Vice President, Bro K Soma-Assistant Secretary of Education, Bro Rudy-Secretary of CEUPM, Bro Zul Thye-Project Coordinator, Bro Marzuki -NUBE Consultant and Sis Aimi-MTUC Coordinator.
The purpose of their visit was to enquire from the MTUC on welfare and workers ‘rights issues, the labour law reform and to discuss current issues and explore possibilities in assisting MTUC in raising worker’s issue.
PAS would also want to raise awareness of workers’ rights and the role of MPs on worker’s issues.
YB Siti Zailah thanked MTUC for receiving their visit in her welcome speech. This is her first program and she believes this visit will benefit PAS to understand worker’s issues and consumers in Malaysia through discussions and cooperation that will be reached and agreed upon by both parties.
She also offered PAS’ assistance to the MTUC to promote and fight for better workers’ rights.
Bro Jey Kumar began the discussion by thanking everyone present and hoped that the discussion would bring positive in bringing benefit to the worker’s in Malaysia.
Bro Zul presented the functions and role of MTUC in helping the workers. The role of the MTUC in establishing the Workers Service Center in assisting all workers including local and foreign workers was also described.
Besides that, Bro Rudy emphasized the importance of the Union in organizing workers to become members of the Union. This was followed by a brief description and presentation by Bro K Soma on the history of the union and the formation of the MTUC.
Bro J Solomon in his winding-up speech informed all present about the cooperation between the MTUC and the Ministry of Human Resources under the New Government. Compared to the previous government, there have been changes, which includes NLAC meetings that are held more frequently every month than ever before. Discussions on minimum wage, Convention 87, the issue of foreign workers, the issue of United Nations reports on the level of poverty of Malaysians and various other issues affecting workers in Malaysia was also discussed.
Bro J Solomon further stated that the MTUC would submit the MTUC proposal on the amendment to the Labor Laws Act such as the Trade Unions Act 1959, the Industrial Relations Act 1967 by end of this week.
MTUC also agreed to give a copy of the proposal to PAS to understand our rationale and hope it will support for the Labour Law Reform in the Parliament.
MTUC also welcome to work with any legislators for the benefit of the worker’s in this country which will eventually benefit the population in the country.
The PAS was grateful for the assistance of the MTUC and expects the MTUC to provide anyinformation to PAS before the next Parliamentary session next month.
YB Tarmizi in his congratulatory speech thanked the MTUC for their valuable cooperation and presentation for the good of the workers. He informed that this Workers / Consumer Division has only just begun in the last two months and will be traveling around the country to hear complaints and concerns. He requested that MTUC divisions in each state to be ready to provide cooperation as provided by the MTUC Hq.
He emphasized that the need for MTUC’s assistance in providing further explanation to PAS on the amendment to the Labor Act, before the sitting of Parliament is appreciated.
