KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) — Up till Tuesday, the immigration department has detained 26,716 illegal immigrants and 299 employers for various offences, the Senate was told Wednesday.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the arrests, made in integrated operations by law enforcement agencies, accelerated the eviction of illegal immigrants, via the use of the biometric system at entry points.
“The immigration department inspected premises occupied by foreigners, rural and urban areas, premises with foreign workers and institutions which acccepted international students.
“Migrant workers who violate provisions of the law under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966 and Immigration Regulations 1963 will be dealt with firmly,” Wan Junaidi said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk Adam Abdul Hamid during the question and answer session at the Dewan Negara.
Wan Junaidi said among the main reasons for the influx of immigrants to Malaysia was the stable economy, stable political situation and abundant job opportunities.
