Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
"It’s an easy procedure to work in Malaysia. An academic certificate of
Junior High School level is the minimum requirement for eligibility. They can
work in the plantation, garment or electronics sector," office head Srimoyo
Tamtomo said.

He said the office had dispatched vice director Eddy Sujoko Pramono to Malaysia
in order to find out more about job vacancies in the neighboring country, as
well as to monitor troubled workers who might end up stranded at the Indonesian
Embassy.

The office, Srimoyo said, also helps cover the initial placement expense for
each worker. There are 250 workers who have used this facility so far. They
are required to repay the placement expense in 10 installments. –JP
