Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
SARIKEI: One man was killed and 95 others were left homeless after fire razed their 17-door longhouse in Jalan Ensurai, Sare, near here, yesterday.
The Fire and Rescue team found the charred remains of Lowest Anak Selin, 62, in a bedroom at the Saba Longhouse after the fire was doused.
According to Sarikei Fire and Rescue Station chief Suna Kahar, 73 of the longhouse’s 96 occupants from 17 families were inside when the fire broke out.
It is learnt that after all the residents had safely fled the burning structure, Lowest dashed back inside to save his belongings.
“After scouring the house, we found the victim’s remains at 2.10pm, in the bedroom.
“The body has been handed over to the police. The cause of the fire and losses are being investigated,” said Sunar, adding that the station was alerted to the fire at 10.08am.
